Here is my dinner experience at Jean-Georges NYC:
Food
Jean-Georges offers a selection of menus including a prix fixe menu ($138), a vegetable menu ($188), a seasonal menu ($218) and the chef’s tasting menu (also $218). A tasting menu wine paring is $168. Given that we had a big lunch, we settled on the prix fixe menu that offered a choice of 3 dishes.
To start, we both ordered the Hamachi Sashimi with Avocado, Yuzu and Radish. The lightness of this dish prepared the palette for all the seafood that followed.
Next, I had Diver Scallops with Caramelized Caulifower and a Caper-Raisin Emulsion and my bestie had the Halibut Steamed with Kaffir Lime, Lemongrass Sauce and White Asparagus.
For the main, I had the Black Sea Bass Crusted with Nuts and Seeds and a Sweet and Sour Jus and my bestie had the Porcini Crusted Arctic Char with Warm Leek Vinaigrette.
(Pardon the poor lighting in the photos. I had to over-compensate exposure for the dim lighting.)
The chocolate themed dessert included Mexican Beignet with a Chipotle Glaze, Sea Salt Meringue Meyer Lemon Ice, Cake and Vanilla, and Bitter Candy.
The citrus & herbs dessert included Citrus Soda and Basil Soup, Anise Macaroon, Grapefruit Tart, and Yuzu Pudding.
The Other Stuff
The dining room is such a beautiful space. It’s light and pristine without being stark and the large windows flood the space with a ton of natural light. It really feels like you’re sitting in the middle of Central Park. The space at Jean-Georges is intimate with tables set very close together.
If I have to gripe about something, it would be about the service. I had ordered 2 fish mains (the waiter did not provide menu suggestions) and when I realized this, I wanted to change one for the dry aged sirloin. I was told my request couldn’t be accommodated as it was too late. Being told “no” was a first at a 3 Michelin Star restaurant! Also, when our dishes were served, the waiter did not explain all of the dishes and ingredients to us. For 2 of the courses, the dishes were simply delivered by the waiter and vamoose he was gone! As the dining tables filled up for the evening, we didn’t receive the same level of attention as we did at the beginning of our meal.
