The holiday season is a perfect time to escape the cold weather for a tropical beach or to simply hop on a train to visit family a few hours away. So you’ve got your luggage and passport, but what about your holiday travel outfit? Sure, sweats are super comfortable, but let’s be serious – aerobic attire is best saved for the gym! When I flew to Dubai for the holidays, arriving in style was half the fun!
The key to the ultimate holiday travel outfit is to think functionally and fashionably. Grab a few basic pieces to layer, as you may travel through changing climates. This also reduces the amount of clothes you need to pack!
The Ultimate Holiday Travel Outfit
Here are my favourite wardrobe pieces to build the ultimate holiday travel outfit to look good and be comfortable while travelling:
Leggings
A pair of black leggings or stylish jeggings is perfect for taking the place of frumpy sweatpants. On long flights, I’m thankful for how the soft elastic waist feels over the feel of jeans, any day. The stretchy fabric lends well to inventive ways of sitting when you’re stuck in cramped seats. Just remember, leggings are not pants, so always wear tops long enough to cover your bottom!
The straight-leg travel yoga pants from Betabrand, a crowdfunded clothing community from San Francisco, are form-fitting like leggings but are roomier and wrinkle resistant. The pants are well-designed for travel since security pockets are hidden into the inner waistband for your passport, cash and credit cards.
Loose Fitting Pants
For an easy, elevated look, loose fitting pants, such as palazzo pants and wide leg pants can take you straight from the arrivals gate to dinner at a chic restaurant. Loose fitting pants with elastic or drawstring waists are the most comfortable for long flights. Choose solid colours or a fun print depending on your travel destination.
Open Front Sweater
If you find the cabin to be extremely cold, like me, you should always fly with a cozy and chic wrap sweater or oversized cardigan. My favourite is a long open front sweater that doubles as a scarf. I prefer this to pullover sweaters because it’s easier to layer. To polish off your look when you land, carry on a belt you can throw on. Choose natural knits like cotton or a cashmere mix to allow maximum breathability.
Scarf
For added warmth, it never hurts to pack a scarf, pashmina, sarong or shawl. Scarves can extend your travelling wardrobe by adding a new statement element. A scarf is so versatile you can use it as a blanket on the beach or roll it up as a neck pillow.
Tunic
These loose fitting tops come in a variety of fabrics and patterns, making them an instant fashionable travel item. Tunics are long enough to cover your behind when paired with leggings. They can be re-worn on your trip to the beach, sightseeing and to fancy dinners. Although more suited to balmy weather, tunics can also be layered.
Maxi Dress
If you’re crunched for time, a maxi dress takes the hassle out of coordinating a top and bottom. To stay warm and toasty on board, throw on a pair of leggings underneath and no one will ever know.
Light Jacket
If you’re headed to somewhere a little cooler, pack a light jacket or leather jacket and layer away! Trench coats don’t have to be reserved for business trips, as they can make a comfy chic sightseeing ensemble. When I travelled to New York in the winter, I wore a light jacket while in transit and packed a heavier parka in my luggage.
Easy to Slip Off Shoes
Easy to slip off ballet flats can get you sprinting to catch your next connection in no time! Aside from looking effortlessly chic, flats are easy to remove at security and on the flight, especially if you prefer to switch to a warm pair of wool socks. For snowy destinations, waterproof black boots with a quick zip can match almost anything.
Finishing Touches
Like a light dusting of cinnamon on your foamy latte, finishing touches will spice up your travel ensemble. Pack a statement necklace, accessories or sunglasses in your carry-on to put on upon arriving at your destination. Don’t forget that a great tote bag can also be part of any travel outfit.
