Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie Paris Review
I recently tried the hammam and gommage treatment at Miraj Hammam Spa by Caudalie Paris, located at the Shangri-La Toronto. Unlike traditional hammams where you bathe in a large group, Miraj Hammam offers private steam chambers. Phew! You could arrange for a couples’ or a group steam, but I got an entire treatment room all to myself.
Getting Ready For Your Treatment
When you enter Miraj Hammam Spa on the 5th floor of the Shangri-La Toronto, you’re greeted by the receptionist for a quick check-in and then ushered into a waiting area to complete some standard health forms. Then, someone leads you into the change room to fit you with slippers and a big, fluffy robe.
The change room at Miraj Hammam Spa is one of the smaller ones I’ve seen at a luxury hotel. There are only 2 bathrooms, 2 showers, and 2 sinks that double as the blow-dry area. The locks on a few lockers were faulty as I had to keep finding the spa lady to open mine for me. It was really nice that the shower gels, facial cleanser, moisturizer, etc. were all Caudalie Paris.
Hammam & Gommage Treatment
The hammam & gommage journey starts with a eucalyptus steam bath. You’re left alone for about 15 minutes in the steam chamber with full access to the temperature control panel. If I faint, how would they know?! So I turned down the temperature because when the steam is on full blast, it gets so steamy that nothing is visible; I was more claustrophobic than anything. The eucalyptus invigorates your circulation and it completely cleared out my nasal passage!
Next, you move to a warm bathing table made of Jerusalem gold marble and lie down for the gommage – a vigorous full body exfoliation. The spa lady takes exfoliation to the next level by using an exfoliating mitt to rub eucalyptus-infused black Moroccan soap all over your body. That mitt worked some exfoliation magic because I’ve never had so much dead skin fall off me before! It was gross, but my skin felt gloriously soft. I couldn’t stop touching my arm!
After the treatment, you can relax in the spa lounge with some sweet tea, grapes and baklava. The dim lighting adds to the relaxation vibe as you sit back with a magazine.
In addition to your spa treatment, you could also access Shangri-La’s Health Club and pool (no photos allowed). All treatment packages over $200 includes access, or it’s $25 to add it.
